Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World
The winter content update for the block-building phenomenon has landed — and it includes the first new weapon introduced into the title since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is finally here and it could very well change how you play Minecraft, especially if you love chaos.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mayhem Mounts drop also adds several new features and enhancements related to riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the perfect fit for this release, as the creators had long felt it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we aimed for a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," explained a senior product manager. "We prototyped a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both felt great when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're curious whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your companions on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action perfectly suited for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the thrust, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and deal more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for mounted duels."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The wild enjoyment can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the elytra and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.
In other words: Sky jousting is now a reality, and it needs to become an Olympic sport without delay.
Another key feature in this new update is the underwater mount. This underwater creature, which is based on the nautilus shells found in-game for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it move you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no need to return to the surface for a breath.
The remaining new features are primarily things that are out to get you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature popping up in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in dispatch the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.
"We've pondered this challenge periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also bring in something for underwater," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for sea mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also notes that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you encounter underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.
The final pair of items on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some highly requested changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford bodies of water while mounted on a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now available at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the best defense it deserves.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
In summary, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a significant enhancement. Add in the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
